“W hen Paula Alcala and her husband moved from Mexico to Oregon nine years ago, he told her she wouldn’t need to learn English.

But when simple tasks such as requesting a shoe became impossible, Alcala decided to educate herself — even if her husband disagreed. She joined Adelante Mujeres, an outreach group that works as a mini-university to help low-income Latina immigrants better themselves and their families.”
