Giving culture to Latino youth in California
Tagged: bilingual, parents“WHAT a weekend we had. Some 600 youngsters, plus parents, descended upon Chabot College for three fun, hard days of ballet folklorico. It was our Danzantes Unidos Festival. Everyone from 6- to 70-year-olds shared something precious: culture.
Having three generations united in cultural dance was unique, but what was more important, especially to our new generation of Latinos, was that they all wore Pumas or Nikes, Levi’s or Guess, and spoke great English.
In other words, bilingualism and biculturalism supported by parents. People came from as far away as San Diego and Oregon ”” talk about putting Hayward on the map! ”” making the trek to Hayward to learn, maintain and show pride in their home culture while wearing and speaking their new culture.”
