But such artists, sporting baseball caps, pinky rings and attitude, are not only behind one of the most popular and controversial musical genres of recent years. Their music is fueling what some call a major cry for change across a burgeoning and diverse Hispanic community that’s struggling to find a single voice in the American melting pot.

To fully understand why reggaeton is becoming so popular, it helps to visit villages like Salinas - one of the poor barrios where this genre was born.”
