“Jannette braved a 1,000-mile trek to America for $300 a month.

She spent two weeks riding in cramped, airless truck trailers and walking through Central America and Mexico to get here. The “coyotes” whom her family paid $4,000 to transport her safely harassed her. Ultimately, they dumped Jannette and a handful of others in a Mexican border town, forcing them to cross the Rio Grande to Texas on their own, she said.

But the opportunity to better provide for her three children back in El Salvador outweighed all of that, the 29-year-old single mother said during an interview earlier this week in San Francisco, where she now lives.”
