“One in every three storefront businesses that open in Elgin are Latino owned, according to the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce, a statistic that mirrors the trend nationwide.

Across the suburbs and the country, the advent of Hispanic-owned businesses grew by 31 percent, totaling 1.6 million in 2002, according to a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau. The number of all U.S. companies grew by 10 percent, to about 23 million, during the same period. “
