“As local leaders worry about the cost of illegal immigrants, South Carolina businesses are seeking out Mexicans as a low-cost, productive alternative to the state’s traditional work force, a University of South Carolina economist told county officials Tuesday.

Douglas Woodward, research director at USC’s Moore School of Business, and a team of graduate students interviewed 381 Mexican immigrants from around the state in 2005, including more than 100 from the Beaufort area.
