“Berenise Vasquez was 10 and her sister Brenda was 4 when their mother smuggled them across the Rio Grande.

That was 14 years ago, but they have not forgotten, even though all three are now legal residents of the United States. The sisters, originally from Guadalajara, are caseworkers at Oakland’s Day Laborer Center in the Fruitvale district, where an average of 200 people ”” some here legally, others not ”” come looking for work.”
