“When Julio E. Gonzalez Jr. dons a black robe this morning, he will be the first Dominican-born judge presiding in a state courthouse in Florida.

”This is only in America that this could happen,” Gonzalez said. “This was not going to happen for me in the Dominican Republic. We were a poor family.”

Gov. Jeb Bush appointed Gonzalez to the Broward County Court on March 6, bringing the number of Hispanic judges in Broward to seven. Since October, Bush has appointed four Hispanic judges in Broward — two in County Court, and two in Circuit Court.”
