“When federal agents announced the arrests late last week of 375 foreign-born gang members nationwide ”” including 15 in metro Atlanta ”” no one was paying closer attention than Cobb County school officials.

The influx of Hispanics in Cobb schools and the national emergence of such gangs as Latin Kings, Mara Salvatrucha and Sureños has created a quandary: School and police officials feel the need to crack down on suspected gang activity to make schools safe. But Latino parents feel that school officials are discriminating against their kids and branding them as gang members without evidence.”
