Knowledge is Power!

“March normally brings good weather and more work for the day laborers who gather in parks and on streets throughout our region, waiting for employers looking for extra workers to come by and hire them. Through the years, immigrants from around the world have counted on picking up these odd jobs to make ends meet and gain a foothold in a new country.

But by order of the Town Board of Mamaroneck in Westchester County, the jornaleros are being driven out of Columbus Park, where they have gathered since 2004. Mariana Boneo, co president of the Hispanic Resource Center there, said the gathering place had been the best option to help the workers and at the same time control the street traffic.”
