“Though he witnessed it firsthand, Moctesuma Esparza still cannot explain the violence that took place in Los Angeles during the Chicano student walkouts of 1968.
Paddled for speaking Spanish in class, denied restroom privileges during lunch, taught a curriculum that excluded their ancestors, students from five East Los Angeles high schools organized peaceful campus walkouts in protest. On the second day of walkouts, police attacked unarmed students at one school, beating them with nightsticks.”
