“The reality of immigration is all around us. But amazingly enough for a nation of immigrants, one word has stymied us in our attempts to deal with it: amnesty.

The Pew Hispanic Center just issued a study estimating that 11.5 to 12 million people in this country are “unauthorized.” They entered or stayed illegally.

Deporting so many people would be impractical and immoral. But Congress seems unwilling to enact reforms accepting immigrants already here, providing for workers or making employers more responsible. Many Republicans cry “amnesty” whenever President Bush seems to recognize the illegal immigrants. But Democrats pose as well, with Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano ordering more National Guardsmen to the Mexican border. Such efforts do little, except drive immigrants to traffickers who might be willing to bring in a terrorist for a price.”
