“The surge of Hispanic people into Shenandoah mirrors a demographic change in the U.S. — an increase in the population of people of Hispanic descent. It grew from less than 23 million in 1990 to 35.3 million in 2000, and last year to an estimated 41.3 million, both immigrant and nonimmigrant, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
In the latest full census in 2000, the majority of Hispanics in the U.S. were Mexican-Americans.”
