US government, Red Cross not ready to serve Latinos

“The largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States condemned the public and private response to the needs of Latinos affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The National Council of La Raza, in a report, accused the federal government and the
American Red Cross of being unprepared to address the needs of Latinos and other communities “of color” in the event of a disaster.

“The disaster response — both public and private — was a disaster for Latinos and other communities of color,” NCLR president Janet Murguia said in a statement.”
