Hispanic Smoking Rate is High in Nevada
“Nevada has more smoke-filled businesses than any other state, and that puts workers at risk of second-hand smoke. The Clark County Health District says Hispanic workers are at higher risk, but they now have more money to tackle the problem.
Maria Azzarelli, CCHD’s senior health educator, said, “Nationally, the Hispanic smoking rate is rising, rising, rising.” Nevada was even worse says Azzarelli. Two years ago, a third of Nevada Hispanics smoked. “The only thing that we can do is combat the tobacco industry with the same tactics. There is media. There are magazine ads. If you pick up magazines that are tailored to young Hispanic women, for example, you will see many, many tobacco advertisements,” Azzarelli said.”
