I can’t believe that this is the only story I could find in English regarding this TV phenom. Here is a story in Spanish

“La Academia’s live concerts have aired for the past three months on KAZH Azteca America (Channel 57). The Mexico City-based show has been a hit for four years (the final two shows last season each drew more than 1 million viewers), but this is the first time producers have pursued U.S. talent.

Houstonian Afid Ferrer Avalos, 23, was one of the final five contestants left standing for the three-hour-plus finale. The winner, though, was El Paso resident Blanca Mariana Vargas Grajeda (known on the show as simply Mariana). The 24-year-old singer took home a Chevy HHR, $25,000, a trip to Acapulco and a record contract with Warner Music Latina.”
