“Leaving the small village of Paradiso de Dios in Haina, Dominican Republic, Castillo came to New York City to share the tragic story of what’s been happening to the residents””primarily the children””of her otherwise happy community. For years, an illegal battery smelter, located in the village of Paradiso de Dios has been flooding the village with toxic Lead. The Lead poisoning has been so widespread that children have died from it.

Sandra Castillo’s home in the Dominican Republic is the closest one to the smelter. Instead of fresh air, Lead fumes are what her children are forced to breathe. When Castillo learned about the dangers of Lead exposure, she fought for the closing of the illegal factory. Though she lacks expertise in science and government lobbying, she organized the community to fight for clean and safe air.”
