“Unlike Shakira, another Colombian “crossover” artist who released an English-language version of an album written en español, Juanes is a poet. The lyrics he writes are melodies, impossible to translate into the more guttural English.
In fact, it’s hard to imagine a better exponent of rock and roll in any language. The 33-year-old composer, guitarist and baritone, whose name is a contraction of Juan Esteban Aristizabal, cut his teeth fronting a Colombian metal band, Ekhymosis. Saturday, before a near-capacity crowd at Milwaukee Theatre, beneath a giant metallic sun backdrop, Juanes’ septet combined this heavy foundation with tropical flavors such as cumbia and vallenato to produce a truly unique sound.”
