“A researcher at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston coined a phrase some 20 years ago to explain a social and statistical oddity.
In 1986, Kyriakos Markides found a disparity between the conventional wisdom concerning poverty and the reality his research uncovered. He found that the Hispanic community registers fewer deaths from cancer and heart disease and has a lower infant mortality rate and longer life expectancy ”” in spite of the community’s predominantly low socioeconomic level. He called it the “Hispanic paradox.” And a recent article in the Houston Chronicle says that all these years later, he’s still looking into it.”
