“No longer guaranteed a respite from the troubled schools, poverty and mass transit problems of the city, some municipalities that hug Chicago’s borders are increasingly grappling with issues that seem more urban than suburban, according to a national study released last week.
The Washington D.C.-based Brookings Institution report highlights a regional population shift from gentrifying Chicago neighborhoods to inner-ring suburbs by new immigrants and urban poor — many of them in search of affordable housing and close proximity to jobs. With an aging population and infrastructure in those communities, some of those municipalities are struggling to meet new sets of social demands, the report found.”
