“Barbara Haymann-Diaz began to notice the trend at Adriance Memorial Library about five years ago.

Young Hispanic children would come to the Market Street facility in the City of Poughkeepsie, mothers in tow, to search for books teachers had assigned the youngsters to read for class.

The mothers would stare at the shelves, confused over which book their child needed and unable to read the simple titles. Haymann-Diaz discovered it was the children who often had to lead their mothers to the correct book.”
