Knowledge is Power!
“I was moved when a bright, beautiful young woman named Araceli approached to tell me her story. She’s a student, majoring in construction engineering. Her parents are from Mexico but she was born and raised in rural Oregon. Discrimination against women is rampant in engineering, she told me, but for Latinas it is even harder. Tears formed in her eyes as she spoke of battling stereotypes in her daily academic life, but her jaw was set strong. “I am going to own my own construction engineering firm,” she stated. She thanked me for having persevered in my own life and career, and said it inspired her to do likewise.”
