“Intent that Mexican American health care professionals involved in the massive relief effort not go unnoticed, the National Hispanic Medical Association on Wednesday honored San Antonians who pitched in to help. Officials with the group have held similar ceremonies for physicians in New Orleans and Houston recently.
Four local community health organizations mobilized right after Katrina and set up clinics in shelters and in the community to care for evacuees, said Dr. Sandra Guerra-Cantu, president-elect of the local Mexican American/Hispanic Physicians Association, or MAPA. Those included CentroMed, Barrio Comprehensive Family Health Care Center, the Metropolitan Health District and University Health System/University of Texas Health Science Center.”
