“The stereotype of the loving, overprotective Jewish or Italian mom is commonplace in the broader society, but not the stereotype of the loving, overprotective Hispanic mom. This is why an aberration like the case of poor Nixzmary Brown is taken by some to be symptomatic of what is wrong with Hispanic culture.

Because I am an American father married to an American mom, I know that the old stereotype about American parents being too selfish to care for their kids is false. And because I am the Hispanic son of Hispanic parents, I know, too, that the old stereotype about Hispanic parents being too thuggish to care for their kids is false….”
