Hispanics influence probation work in Iowa. Speaking Spanish is a big advantage now for people who are seeking work as probation officers.

“Central Iowa’s growing Hispanic population is creating change for Iowa’s probation officers.

One probation officer in Des Moines has a caseload of about 90 to 100 offenders who speak only Spanish. Other Mexican immigrant offenders in Des Moines are supervised by English-speaking probation officers assisted by translators, said Sally Kreamer, assistant director of community corrections for the 5th Judicial District, which covers 16 counties in central Iowa….”
