“Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano took a harder line on immigration on Monday, backing sanctions against employers who unlawfully hire illlegal immigrants and asking the Pentagon to help the state send National Guard troops to the Mexican border. Those ideas put forward by the Democratic governor have strong support in conservative quarters and the former is opposed by business interests.

Napolitano, in her annual State of the State Address, voiced support for state fines and other sanctions against businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants. That idea has had the backing of conservative Republicans and some Democrats who want to punish scofflaw employers….”
