Southwest Kansas has high Latino HIV rate

“According to the coordinator of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care, Region 9 Arturo Ponce, almost 75 percent of the infected population in the southwest of Kansas is Latinos.
“This reality is chilling because this tendency could stop the individual development of Latinos in educational, economic and financial aspects,” Ponce expressed. He indicated that on a state level, the most infected population is the Caucasians, followed by African-Americans and Latinos.

Ponce added that this situation in southwestern Kansas impacts the entire community because of the costly treatments of afflicted patients. For example, he said that the costs of medicine vary between $2,500 and $3,000 a month for each patient, and these costs are paid by state funding. Medicine is not free, so the legal status of the patient does not matter. “It is very sad for me to tell the people that their results are positive. I hate that part of my job,” Ponce said. …”
