Bob Menendez, D-N.J., son of Cuban immigrants, will be the second Cuban American to serve in the U.S. Senate. ”What a country” also captures the experience of scores of immigrants who have arrived in the United States in search of the American Dream.

The nomination of Menendez to fill the remaining term of Gov. Jon Corzine’s seat in the Senate is not only the story of the Cuban-American rise to power or even that of the Latinization of our country, but it is fundamentally the story of democracy in the United States….”
