“The growing importance of the Hispanic community in the United States and the consequent increase in the numbers of non-Hispanics learning Spanish is prompting a significant number of cultural and educational exchanges. Spanish is far and away the most-studied foreign language at secondary and university level in the United States. Spain is the third most popular destination for US students to study abroad after Britain and Italy.
Given the above, it is difficult to understand the limited presence in the United States of Spanish institutions dedicated to promoting the language, history, and culture of this country. American children know that Frenchman Gilbert du Montier, the Marquis de Lafayette, fought in the Revolution against the British, but little or nothing about Spaniard Bernardo de Gálvez, who was governor of Louisiana, and whose forces inflicted serious damage to British naval power in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, indirectly helping the rebel cause….”
