Knowledge is Power!
“Schools across the nation and throughout King County have seen a rapid increase in the number of students learning to speak English.
The Renton School District is no different. As of November, 1,630 of the district’s 13,000 students - about 13 percent - were studying English as a second language. The number of students learning English districtwide has increased from an annual average of 172 in 1993-94 to 1,480 last year, an 860-percent jump.
To a large extent, enrollment figures mirror immigration trends for the areas served by the school district. It’s no accident that the bulk of those students attend elementary schools in east Renton. That’s where most of the city’s immigrants and refugees have settled since 1990, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures.”
