“Plata, who has uncles in Durham, provides assistance and translations to about 20 plaintiffs a week. Most are local Indian women. Plaintiffs who speak Náhuatl — an unrelated Indian language that Plata doesn’t speak — come with interpreters.
Most complaints are of domestic violence and marital issues. When local men emigrate to North Carolina, they often abandon their wives and children, Plata says.”
