Maria Carrillo - Her heritage and success as a student in Mexico help the biology, ESL teacher lift young Latinos

“Carrillo was rewarded Tuesday morning with the Milken National Educator Award for her work helping Latino students overcome those challenges.

Working as an instructional assistant for the Beaverton School District, Carrillo says she quickly recognized that immigrants encounter language and cultural barriers that often keep them from success. Few teachers, she says, could speak Spanish to help students understand their curriculum.”
