“Tell Congress to take a stand against a reckless federal budget bill. Last week, committees in the House of Representatives cut important federal programs that provide low-income people with the opportunity to rise out of poverty, obtain health care services, and put food on the table for their families. Among the most destructive for Latinos, were cuts made to Medicaid and the Food Stamp Program. In addition, there were broad cuts made to child care, child protection programs, and student loans for college.

These cuts are being pushed forward with the justification that they will help pay for hurricane relief in the Gulf Coast and Florida and reduce the deficit. However, the budget proposal would cut funding for programs effectively serving low-income communities nationwide and increase tax cuts for upper-income people. In addition, the House budget proposal would actually increase the deficit, which would further endanger these vital programs in the future.”
