After Hurricane, Refugees Grope for Survival in Ruins – New York Times

Tagged: ,

“It had been weeks since the floodwaters swept through the riverside neighborhoods throughout southern Mexico and Guatemala, dragging whole houses downstream, burying neighborhoods in sand and causing mudslides in the mountains that buried towns and cut people off from the rest of the world.

Though the waters have receded, the damage done by Hurricane Stan will take months and in some cases years to repair. Thousands of people have lost everything they own and have no hope of recovering it. For weeks after the flood, thousands more were still cut off from the rest of the world in isolated mountain hamlets, waiting for helicopters to bring in food and ferry out the sick.”
