“Fast forward to the present and another Irish-American Holyoke mayor ushered through the School Committee a proposal to make a day traditionally celebrated by Latin Americans a holiday for the city’s students, who are largely Latino.

And for the first time in Western Massachusetts political history, Latino contenders are in the double digits. They represent 12 of the 54 candidates vying for seats on city councils and school committees in Holyoke and Springfield.”
