Knowledge is Power!
“My husband, severely monolingual yet highly fluent in hand gestures and facial expressions, married into a family that often conducts its social life in a language he doesn’t understand. Sometimes I remember to translate, sometimes I manage to veer the conversation into English, and sometimes . . . well, sometimes I just plain forget.
It is on these occasions that he feels left out, a stranger in a strange land. Because I go from one language to another so easily, because I’m rarely conscious of drifting into my native tongue, I can’t understand what the big deal is about. We are not intentionally excluding him; we’re simply doing what comes naturally.”
