“El Dia de los Muertos is a festival in which Latino people in Mexico and other Central and South American countries as well as the United States honor departed family members.

Anthropologists say the holiday, with its Catholic overtones of All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls Day (Nov. 2), draws heavily from pre-Columbian (and pre-Christian) festivals that celebrated corn and other harvests and focused on connecting with the dead.”
