“At the Helen Hayes Theatre on West 44th Street, there’s a first for Broadway. It’s a show written, directed and performed by Latinos. “Latinologues” has been successful across the country for years with dozens of actors. But this fall, four performers bring it to Broadway. Playwright Rick Najera wrote the monologues featuring a dozen Latino characters living life in America. The monologues take the audience from the border patrol to a beauty pageant to Najera’s Border Patrol officer Buford Gomez who opens the show with “I put the panic to Hispanic”.
Cheech Marin spoke with WCBSTV.com’s Dana Tyler, and says he’s thrilled to tie the acts together in his stage-directing debut. Dana asked him, “Do you think you’ll offend anybody”. And in a quick Cheech and Chong-like response, Marin said laughing, “Oh, I hope so!” He added, “I want this play to be edgy. I want people to look into the stereotypes and see the depth of what’s behind them and that there are real people there behind those stereotypes. How do they feel about looking at both sides of border? That is dilemma that we are in and this play examines that in a very funny and poignant way”.”
