“This year, both Democrats and Republicans claim their candidates are reaching out to the Latino community like never before, and with good reason: According to exit polls during the 2001 election for governor, Democrat James E. McGreevey received 72 percent of the Latino vote.

“They have to recognize that there is a voting bloc out there that is coming out, that is active, that is becoming more and more knowledgeable about the issues,” said Ramon de la Cruz, director of the New Jersey Division of Elections. “And they will have to come out and respond to that community, in terms of policy, in terms of appointments, in terms of local social issues that impact the Hispanic community.”"
