“HIV-AIDS, which afflicts a million U.S.
residents, has had a devastating effect on the New York borough of the Bronx, particularly among its big Hispanic population, which considers the area the pandemic’s “ground zero” in this country.

New York is the U.S. metropolitan area most ravaged by the disease with 140,000 persons diagnosed with AIDS since the 1980s, more than twice the number in Los Angeles, the second-most-afflicted city.”
