“As he promised, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has adopted a bipartisan approach to judicial appointments. More than 40 percent of his appointments have been Democrats and independents. Unlike former crime-fighting tough guy Gov. Gray Davis, who filled the bench with prosecutors and big-business lawyers, Schwarzenegger has nominated a number of defense attorneys.

The governor hasn’t done as well in appointing minorities, particularly Latinos. His failure to reach out to them is adding tension to Schwarzenegger’s already strained relations with the Hispanic community. But it’s something he and his judicial-appointments secretary, John Davies, can repair by pursuing qualified minority candidates.”
