“When a cousin of Broward County Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin died a few years ago, her aunt told everyone he had lupus. Only much later did the aunt acknowledge her son had AIDS, the Cuban-born politician recalls.
That sense of shame about HIV/AIDS is still prevalent among Hispanics, as with other groups, and stands as a big reason the community has been hit hard by the virus, Wasserman-Rubin and activists said Wednesday in preparing for Latino AIDS Awareness Day on Saturday.
