Emergency responders reach out to help beyond English
Tagged: bilingual, police“OCALA -Some days Karen McKinney wishes she could say “heart attack” in Spanish. It might not hurt if one day she could say “car crash” in Mandarin Chinese, or “help is coming” in Swahili or French.
But McKinney, a 911 call taker for the Ocala Police, does have a list at hand of foreign phrases such as “Oon moe maunt see voo play.” That’s the phonetic French spelling for “one moment please,” which would give McKinney a couple seconds to dial an interpreter from a national bilingual service.”
Please notes some (many) sites require registration. Many times it is free.
