Not many people in Tucson are familiar with the name José Cosme de Urrea. But he was a “local boy” who became a Mexican Army general, high-profile participant in the Texas war for independence and the United States-Mexican War, governor of Sonora and Sinaloa, chief political officer of Durango and a personal favorite of Antonio López de Santa Anna, the dictator of Mexico.”
