Last year, Yuridia Gaxiola was a student at Mesa High School. This year, she’s touring the United States and Latin America, has an album out in Mexico and $92,000 in her bank account.

The reason for the change? La Academia, a reality show based in Mexico City, in which contestants live together and perform songs. It’s a little Big Brother, a little American Idol and famous in Spanish-speaking territories. The July finale attracted nearly 1.2 million viewers in the United States.
