Two Valley Hispanics in desperate need of bone-marrow donations are sparking an extraordinary response from the Latino community and are highlighting the national need for minority donors.
Almost 800 Hispanics since June have lined up at Food City grocers, Catholic churches, city halls, shopping malls and a Spanish-language radio station to register as potential bone-marrow donors for Bridgett Contreras, 9, and Guadalupe “Lupe” Saavedra, 41. Both are leukemia patients whose plights have received extensive media coverage. That’s about as many potential Latino donors that recruiters see in a typical year in Arizona.
