Herrera-Sobek is Chair of the Chicana and Chiano Studies Department and holds the Luis Leal Endowed Chair in Studies at the University of California, . She taught at the University of California, Irvine for several years and has been a Visiting at Stanford and Harvard Universities. Herrera-Sobek is the author of several books including The Bracero Experience: Elitelore versus Folklore (1979); The Mexican Corrido: A Feminist Analysis (1990); and Northward Bound: The Mexican Immigrant Experience in Ballad and Song (1993).
