Viva el béisbol!
Tagged: Baseball, Dominican RepublicBet you didn’t know that, averaged out per capita, the Dominican Republic has contributed more players to baseball’s major leagues than the state of California, which happens to be the state with the largest roster of major league ballplayers in the union. And they didn’t even start letting Dominicans play in the majors until the color barrier fell in 1956.
This week, the Newark Museum opened “America’s Pastime: Portrait of the American Dream, Works by Freddy Rodriguez,” a show of paintings, neon, etched granite slabs and three sculptural installations by the Queens-based artist devoted to Dominican achievement in the sport. The exhibit is in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month at the museum, and on Nov. 19, the museum will host a lecture/discussion provoked by Rodriguez’s work, featuring Omar Minaya, general manager of the Mets, and two writing academics, Alejandro Pompez and Adrian Burgos Jr., who are experts on the history of Latino baseball.
