In “Sueno,” a first feature by writer-director Renee Chabria, a Mexican musician follows his dream (hence “sueno”) and comes to America with the hope of making it big in the face of daunting odds.

By now it“s an age-old refrain, but this softer-edged take on “Crossover Dreams” has a warm affection for its music and thoughtful performances from leads John Leguizamo and Elizabeth Pena that help compensate for that familiarity, not to mention a distracting blending of genres at the expense of a sturdy dramatic foundation.
