Hispanic coming-of-age tradition lets girls be a princess for a day

Ashley was at her quinceañera, a Hispanic tradition that celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday — a time when a girl leaves behind her childhood and becomes a woman. Quinceañeras, a coming-of-age custom similar to Sweet 16 parties or debutante balls, remain popular in Latin America but aren’t as common among second- and third- generation Latinos living in the United States, said Ashley’s mother, Madeline Montalvo of Binghamton.
